The Catholic Worker : Hawai`i

Serving Kalihi-Pālama in the spirit of Matthew 25

"Come, you that are blessed by my Father,
inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world;
for I was hungry and you gave me food,
I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink,
I was a stranger and you welcomed me,"
The Holy Bible: New Revised Standard Version (Mt 25:34–35).

Wallyhouse, the only Catholic Worker House in Hawai'i, is named in honor of Wally Inglis, a lifelong peace activist and defender of the most vulnerable. Wally has been extremely active in the effort to serve Hansen’s disease patients and was a driving force in having the old Hale Mōhalu transformed into low income housing for the elderly, the infirm and those suffering from Hansen’s disease. He and his wife Kay are actively involved in Wallyhouse's ministry which includes a food pantry, a mail system, device charging services, a prayer wall, a peace garden, and Kay’s Cafe-- a hot lunch every Tuesday for guests!

In January 2018 we happily welcomed two members of the Third Order of St Francis, an Episcopal lay order of those who follow the Rule of St. Francis; namely a life of poverty and service to the least among us. David Catron and barbara bennett, as Franciscan Catholic Workers, previously served nearly 15 years in Brazil, serving the poor there and establishing the Third Order among the Brazilian people.  Now here in Hawai'i, we welcome and are grateful to the many volunteers who help Wallyhouse continue strong in its ministry.

Our current Wallyhouse managers Kū & Jeremy work tirelessly to organize volunteers, create joyful spaces, and promote a safe and healthy lifestyle for all who visit Wallyhouse.

Volunteers are always most welcome to pack a food pantry bag, play in the garden dirt, visit with our resident cat Tom-Tom, or find a moment of peace our Prayer Room!

IN MEMORY OF DAVID CATRON

With sadness we share that our friend, David Catron, TSSF, died on August 24th, 2020 at the Queen's Medical Center.  David became ill during a walk and did not regain consciousness.  He was 81 years old.

We shall always remember him as the brilliant, hilarious, deeply insightful man who, following the call of God, left his entire old life behind, because, as a long time Franciscan, he devoted himself first to the poor in the U.S., then in Rio de Janeiro, and then to those in need here in Kalihi-Pālama where he and barbara founded Wallyhouse, the first ever Catholic Worker house of hospitality in Hawai'i.

When David's daughter Ruth asked him why he decided to come to Hawai'i, he said: "I'm glad I have the opportunity to serve even though I feel quite incapable anymore.  My body is declining and my mind is getting fuzzy.  My speech is strained.  But I am glad if I can offer anything -- that is really great.  The alternative is to lay down somewhere and die.  I'd rather die on my feet."

About the Catholic Worker

Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin founded the Catholic Worker movement on May 1, 1933, in New York City with the inaugural edition of the Catholic Worker newspaper.

Their vision, based on the radical life and message of Jesus, continues today in over 200 Catholic Worker communities, in cities and on farms, throughout the world.

Wallyhouse, the Honolulu Catholic Worker founded in March 2018, is also committed to nurturing the poor in body, mind and spirit, non-violent resistance of oppression and practicing radical acts of kindness.

"The biggest challenge of the day is: how to bring about a revolution of the heart, a revolution that has to start with each one of us."
